Gansville Herbs

It all started with parsley. Buford Shively, a retired auditor for the federal government, discovered parsley and a different way of cooking when he moved to New Orleans after attending college in Monroe. When his job moved him to a small town south of Dallas, he found he would have to drive 35 miles to find fresh parsley. So he started growing it for himself. One thing led to another and soon he was growing a host of different herbs.
After retirement Shively moved back to our area and decided that growing herbs would keep him busy and productive. He is now in his third year of providing Louisiana with fresh herb, vegetable, and landscape plants through his Gansville Herb Company. Shively is always looking for unique offerings and feels that the people of Ruston are receptive to new and different products. He also sells at various festivals around Louisiana, the biggest being the Sunset Herb Fest near Lafayette in May.
For the Ruston Farmers’ Market, Shively will be selling a variety of herb plants, some unique landscaping plants, and various vegetable plants including the heirloom tomato “Cherokee Chocolate”. His herb farm is just south of Jonesboro in the community of Gansville and is open to the public during the work week.
